welcome to in a card's blog...

i know that "cute" is not a word typically used to describe good design, but in my world, it is. if it's your first reaction to say, "aww... how cute!" then it must be just that! "C-U-T-E." and i'm talking about so incredibly, ridiculously cute that the most masculine of men will even say those three words without thinking twice about it.

and so that is what i hope to share with you on my blog...

a combination of really unique ideas, simple thoughts that come randomly into my mind, along with "cute" designs that i've designed or come across.

silhouette keepsakes

back in 2007, i created a silhouette of my cousin ben to use on his cowboy themed birthday invitations for his 2nd birthday.

as a gift, i took the silhouette and turned it into a little framed keepsake, which since, has been on display in his bedroom.

fast forward to 2012, ben now has a little brother, zac, who recently turned 2.  so of course, it's only fair that i created a silhouette keepsake for zac in celebration of his 2nd birthday.

single card draw

i turned my 3 card casino invite into a single, more economical, version for a soon to be 21-year-old, hayley.  i was able to fit all the party info on one card but still keep the small size of the invitation so it doesn't lose it's almost life like version of an actual playing card.

feel free to contact me if you are interested in purchasing these invitations.

arts & crafts party invites

this year, for my niece kayla's 7th birthday party, she's having an arts & crafts party.  when my sister first came to me for invitation ideas, my mind was a complete blank.  very unlike me when someone presents me with such a fun party idea.

i'm not sure if i was just over thinking the idea since every year i have this need to top past invitations that i've done for her.  or perhaps, i've just been feeling a bit overwhelmed with my work load lately.

either way, i had to step back for a second and remind myself that simple is what makes my designs unique.

so here is how the arts & crafts party invitations turned out...

i created a fun and colorful paint splatter background, put all the info on a sheet of vellum paper as an overlay, and topped each invitation with a real paintbrush that each guest can keep and use.
different color paint brushes and envelopes were used to keep with the very colorful theme.
to see past invitations i've created for kayla, see the links below and let me know which one is your favorite so far.

scott + lori : wrapped up in love

i've known scott since i was in high school.  he was a friend of my sisters and quickly became like a big brother to me.  (he even left me with his nintendo game system and ALL his games when he left for college.)  i reconnected with scott via facebook a couple years ago and in doing so, he discovered that i specialized in custom wedding invitations.  when the time came, scott and his fiancĂ©, lori, got in touch with me to create their wedding invitation.

scott & lori wanted wedding invitations that were simple, yet elegant and modern.  i immediately knew my "wrapped up in love" invitations would be the perfect suggestion.  this particular design has been customized and personalized a couple times over the past several years and each time it always looks like a brand new invitation design.  i love how each design reflects the bride and groom along with how they envision their special day.

here is how scott & lori's turned out...

i've been told that one of the favorite things about this invitation is how it's all self-contained so when each guest opens their envelope it makes for a very clean and pretty presentation.

love the idea of this reply card that lori had!

the added insert is always great for giving your guests any additional information to make their travels that much easier.  whether it's directions to the church and/or reception or hotel suggestions for those out of town guests.
a wedding set is never complete without the thank you note.  using just the couple's names allows for any leftover thank you notes to be used for a later time.

special invites for special occasions

i love getting emails that say, "i googled cupcake invitations, came across yours and I MUST HAVE THEM for my daughters birthday!"

actually, it's always pretty amazing when someone emails me AND chooses me to create invitations for their special occasion because there are so many other options available online these days.

two of my fun birthday invitations got recreated once more recently.  first one, is based on debra's casino night invites.
and the second one, is based on my niece's 1st birthday cupcake themed party.

custom bridal shower invite

you may have read a few blog posts ago, about jessica, from Silhoupette.  well turns out she's also a soon to be bride and her friend christine, from Christine Chang Photography, contacted me to create her bridal shower invitations.  it's a fun alice in wonderland afternoon tea inspired bridal shower and a very sweet custom illustration was supplied to me to be the main focus of the invitation.

check out this very playful illustration, complete with a hidden mickey mouse and a silhoupette incorporated into the design created especially for jessica and how i applied it onto the invitation.

if you'd like to learn more about the illustration and it's creator, feel free to get in touch with christine directly.  you can contact her by visiting her website, www.christinechangphoto.com.  i know she'll be more than happy to share her contact with you.

winter wonderland

my nephew is obsessed with penguins right now. not sure how or why, but for halloween he wanted to be a penguin and for his 5th birthday party, when my sister asked him what kind of party he wanted, he said, "PENGUINS!" so there you have it.  the inspiration to my latest invitation design...  a winter wonderland themed birthday party, complete with a little party penguin.

basic white envelopes are always fun to dress up with envelope icings and sticker seals!

amanda + nicholas' lala land wedding weekend

chloe, from Chlo+E, has been helping plan for her brother nicholas and soon to be sister in law, amanda's upcoming wedding weekend of fun. first on her list is a fun wedding weekend invitation to the guests announcing all the different festivities that is going to take place before and after the actual wedding day. many of the guests are coming in from out of town so the fun theme of the "lala land wedding weekend" is very appropriate. they decided it would be fun to incorporate a fun map into the invite pin pointing the different locations each festivity is going to take place at. here's a look at the finished piece...

a simple 1 color, dark gray ink, printed on a beautiful luxe white cardstock, with rounded corner, helps keep the classic look of their wedding, but giving it a more casual and fun feel for the entire wedding weekend.

sherry + michael : enlightened love

sherry and i went to high school together and reconnected this past year on facebook. it was such a wonderful surprise when she contacted me in regards to designing her wedding invitations.

before i start talking about the wedding invitation, here are a couple things that i remember most about sherry from high school... sherry was my biology partner in mr. mclaughlin's class, sherry's older brother was and still is a really good friend of my older sister, sherry loved to write poetry and based on the few that she shared with me, i remember thinking that she is a true romantic.  and after all these years, i believe she still is and has found the love of her life, michael.

sherry and michael came to me with a very distinct style and vision for their wedding invitation. they're wedding is set to be outdoors at a ranch/winery. the elements they wanted to incorporate were a whimsical feel with fireflies, mason jars and their wedding colors, dark chocolate and a pale blush pink. they liked the idea of iridescent or shimmery paper but still wanted to keep it simple with just the invitation and reply card.

all they had to say was "iridescent or shimmery paper" and my heart had melted. i knew that these invitations were going to be very fun and different then anything else i had ever done.

the finished piece consists of a dark chocolate metallic cardstock printed with 2 metallic inks, silver and gold. since the reply card needed to be a lighter color so that guests could write in their response, we decided to go with a very pale blush pink metallic cardstock incorporating the second color of their wedding.

congratulations to sherry & michael on your up and coming wedding and your new life together!

rebeca + braulio : wrapped up in love

it's been a busy year of weddings so far this year! my next few posts will showcase a few of the wedding invitations i've had the pleasure of designing recently. as always, it truly is an honor to be a part of announcing such a special day in two people's lives.

rebeca & braulio really liked the style and elegance of kari & michael's, "endless love", wedding invitations i designed several years ago, so their invitation follows a very similar layout. however, since all of my invitations are always custom made to order to compliment the bride & groom, i created a custom pattern and motif, used throughout the invitation, that i felt represented both rebeca & braulio.

the finished piece is a metallic silver & dark plum ink printed on a grey white speckled cardstock, mounted on a metallic plum cardstock with a silver metallic band to hold the postcard style reply card and an additional insert piece of information, all tucked into a silver metallic envelope.

congratulations rebeca & braulio on your new life together!

the parties continue...

the summer seems to be pretty jam packed with parties and all sorts of fun events as my inbox has been consistently receiving inquiries and requests for birthdays, parties and baby showers.  here are a few that started off the summer for me.

i received a special request for a garden bug theme birthday party in the style of my little invites.  the outcome was this little love bug invite that will shortly make its way to my etsy shop along with a couple new designs i've been working on.  (stay tuned for those!)
a lovely young lady contacted me after seeing my 30th themed cupcake toppers and wanted to do something special for her own 30th.  here are her flirty thirty cupcake toppers and matching thank you notecards.
to complete the minnie mouse themed birthday party invitations i designed, here is a look at a couple additional things i did to help bring in the theme to the event.
